The first episode of genital herpes happens soon after the original transmission. As said above some people will have very mild genital herpes symptoms while others symptoms can be quite severe. The main symptom of genital herpes is the appearance of lesions. You can see blisters with fluid in them or ulcers. The blisters will rupture into ulcers after a few days and will crust. After they crust they will heal within a month. The most common area to see genital herpes symptoms are on the penis, on the vulva, near the anus, inside vagina, and on the thighs.
It is common for women to have more severe signs of genital herpes than men. Many times when women contract the disease if symptoms appear inside the vaginal they may mistake it for something else. Many women will mistake genital herpes symptoms for a urinary tract infection. If the symptoms are accompanied with a discharge it may also be mistaken for a yeast infection. If a woman gets these symptoms often she should be checked for a genital herpes infection.
Some other symptoms of herpes can include:
Pain while urinating
Headaches
Flu-Like Symptoms
After the first episode most people will have recurring episodes or outbreaks. These outbreaks are normally milder than the first episode. The number of outbreaks will vary from person to person. Some people may only have one or two outbreaks a year while others may have up to eight outbreaks in a year. It is not known what causes a genital herpes outbreak but some good basic advice is to exercise, eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, and try not to become involved in stressful situations.
The symptoms from recurring outbreaks are often very mild and much easier to mistake. They can appear like and be mistaken for:
Ingrown hairs
Insect bites
Pimples
Spots
Rash
Often the virus will be active and the infected person will not even be aware of it and they may not be showing any symptoms. The shedding of the virus is called asymptomatic shedding.
Prodrome is a symptom of genital herpes that indicates that an outbreak is coming. People will feel various symptoms such as pain, itching, or tingling before an outbreak of genital herpes. Within the next couple of days lesions will generally appear. If you can sense and recognize the prodrome you can begin your medicines to help reduce the symptoms and length of your outbreaks.
