Herpes Diet Nutrition & Lifestyle

There is no cure for herpes but there are some diet and lifestyle changes that could possibly make your life easier if you are suffering with herpes.

The Lifestyle Approach

Because having a strong immune system can help fighting your herpes outbreaks we suggest trying the following:

-Eating a health and balanced diet
-Manage your stress effectively
-Exercising regularly
-Getting a healthy amount of sleep
-Finding someone to talk to about your issues

The Dietary Approach

Arginine/Lysine Ratio

Nutrition and health have an influence on outbreaks and their occurrences, and length of healing time. It is also beneficial to practice good health overall, including emotionally, and physically.

Herpes DNA uses the amino acid L-arginine to replicate itself and form a virus. Early studies using laboratory cultures demonstrated that L-arginine was necessary for herpes growth. Another amino acid, L-lysine, blocked the bio-availability of arginine. Thus, the ratio of arginine/lysine amino acids in foods is important.

Arginine can be found in chocolate, peanuts, and cashews. Therefore, a diet low in arginine, and high in lysine can be beneficial. Lysine can be found in cheese, milk, fish, lamb, and beef. Many people believe that increase intake of lysine can suppress the spread of the virus, and recurrences.

Some researches have discovered that certain foods can help reducing the number of outbreaks that one can have over time. Some of these foods are broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels, which all naturally contain indole-3-carbinol. Cranberries which contain proanthocyanidin A-1 have also been shown to be beneficial.

Monolaurin

While there is no cure for herpes, some food supplements have been effective in reducing the frequency and duration of outbreaks. Monolaurin, a simple lipid supplement, was shown to be active against Herpetic virus types. Dr. Andrew Weil recommends it for Herpes suppression. As always, it might be a good idea to discuss other options with your doctor.
